Marketing and Tie-Ins are Strange Part 1

I'll be the first to admit that I sometimes don't get how some marketing people think and/or why some tie ins work and others don't. And yes I look at some products that I have bought over the years and I really have no cause to wag my finger and shake my head at other fandoms, but hey I'm a hypocrite!

Space: 1999 - I watched it faithfully when it was on and I loved it. And not too long ago I re-watched the series via Netflix and it was silly fun. But, even back then I knew how silly it really was, but I still watched the show and I bought the novelizations that were released back then:

And heck I probably bought and read them when they came out. If I had known that there was also a comic:

I would have bought that too. If the cover of the comic is anything to go by - it looks way better than the show ever was!

So color me amused to see that book publisher Powys Books has not only been republishing the novels in pricey hardcover omnibus editions, but they are publishing new original novels based on the series.

I'm strangely and disturbingly intrigued by the whole idea of re-reading the original novelizations and new novels. Yes, it's bad and wrong of me to think of doing it. After all, I could be reading something important and intellectually uplifting, but I know that I'd be secretly thinking of Space: 1999 novels while I was doing it.

My only consolidation is that any of this is way better than:

Oh dear god why?!? Oh, sure Mr. French strides the earth like a Butlerian God creating minor and exceedingly less awesome imitators in his wake (like Mr. Belvedere.) But why would even fans of Family Affair (and yes they exist because season box sets keep on coming.) say to themselves:

If only there was another way to follow the adventures of Buffy, Jody, Sissy, Uncle Bill, Mr. French and Mrs. Beasley* -  perhaps in comic form...

It's that target audience that scares me. You know one day they'll snap and it will be bloodbath city across the nation.

And please note the special bonus in the comic:

Giant Buffy Poster Inside!

*twitch*

The thought that the bonus would be considered desirable and would encourage people to buy it promises to keep me awake tonight, curled up in a semi-fetal position wondering if there are people I know and think are sane and productive members of society that have some disturbing shrine to Family Affair in their homes with that poster as a centerpiece surrounded by little votive candles shaped like Mrs. Beasley....

* And even more frightening, I didn't need to look up the character names, I still remember them. My brain, in all its perversity, chooses to hold on that information while still being unable to remember the name of that cute woman that I keep bumping into at work who knows me by name and always says hi. Why does my brain hate me so?

Thus in the greater context there's nothing wrong with wanting to read Space: 1999 novels, right?  Or do I need to build even more elaborate rationalizations?

[info]raincoaster.com: If only

If only someone would start a blog from the POV of Mr. French. That would be the world's most head-explodingly awesome blog.

And, uh, I remember reading Family Affair comics. But it seems so unfair there was never one for The Courtship of Eddie's Father.

Agreed a Mr. French blog would in fact define awesome.

Surprisingly enough there was a Courtship of Eddie's Father comic which I was planning to reference in Part 2 (sometime Monday or Tuesday).

Interesting enough used copies of all those old Dell and Gold Key TV sit com tie in comics sell used for a fairly hefty price considering their relative invisibility nowadays. Family Affair for example, note actually having the Buffy poster in tact ups the value significantly!

Most people are unaware of them nowadays, but there are some fans and collectors out there apparently.

I'm half tempted to buy some of them buy some of them, but I'm insane in my curiosity about TV tie ins and lost comics.

[info]zaius_nation: "Family Affair" was worse than the Nanny and the Prof.

I hated "Family Affair" too. I hated Mr. French, and I just wanted to beat up Jody for being such a loser.

Sure the kids were annoying and the show silly. But don't you be dissing Mr. French!

Are you a closet Mr. Belvedere fan who can't face the greatness of the superior original article?
